Vox Hunt: My Favorite Plant
Show us your favorite plant that lives in your home.
I spent almost 45 minutes trying to identify this plant but was unable do complete the mission. I believe I purchased it in 2005 and gave it to Ericka for our wedding anniversary. I explained to her that the plant was a symbol of our marriage. She chuckled and proceeded to name the plant “Our Marriage.”
This particular plant is interesting because it requires very little maintenance (I have only trimmed it back once). It does not need direct sunlight, a lot of watering, and the cats do not eat it for some reason. Periodically, a large red leaf will unravel from its center. Over time, the leaf will grow out and turn green.
Occasionally, Our Marriage will be watered. Sometimes people will bump into Our Marriage and knock it down, since it sits on the floor next to an oft-used window. Our Marriage always is righted again. Someone usually picks off Our Marriage’s dead leaves that have drooped on the side of the plain brown ceramic pot.
Our Marriage is a hearty plant (whatever it is officially) and continues to grow new large, red leaves that transition to a deep summer green. Like most things in our house, these leaves accumulate dust that needs to be wiped off to reveal a nifty shine.
